University of Central Missouri, or UCM for short, is a four-year public institution in Warrensburg, which is the county seat of Johnson County, situated in the US state of Missouri, having a population estimated at a number of more than 16 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. UCM was founded in 1871 and it first started as State Normal School, District 2, which later became Warrensburg Teachers College.
The university had its name changed several times, over the years, its current name being adopted in 2005, when Missouri Governor Matt Blunt signed into law a provision authorizing the name changing. Currently, UCM has an enrollment of more than 11 000 students, and offers educational programs in numerous fields of study, through several academic divisions, which include: the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, Harmon College of Business Administration, College of Education and The Honors College.
UCM's athletic teams are known as the Central Missouri Mules and Jennies, who compete in NCAA Division II, MIAA, in various sports, for both men and women, including in baseball, basketball, football, golf and softball. Their distinctive colors are cardinal and black, and their mascot is Mo the Mule.
Among University of Central Missouri's noteworthy alumni, there are: Dale Carnegie - author of How to Win Friends and Influence People, James Evans - inventor of Cheerios, Allan Kayser - actor, played the role of Bubba Higgins on Mama's Family, David Steward - CEO of World Wide Technology, Inc., the world's largest African American-owned company, and Grant Curtis - Executive producer of Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3, among others.
